Leicester celebrates Chinese New Year

by Beatriz Abreu Ferreira

The people of Leicester came together at the weekend to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

A procession with the traditional Chinese dragons took place on Sunday(JAN26) from Jubilee Square to New Market Square, via High Street, the Clock Tower and Humberstone Gate, to welcome the Year of the Rat.

A giant rat headed the parade, followed by people carrying placards with the other 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac.

Despite bad weather, many people with different backgrounds saw the traditional dragon’s parade and dance which symbolise prosperity and good fortune.

The Chinese New Year celebrations will continue with several performances and workshops until Saturday, February 8.
