County wildlife hospital to be ‘forced to destroy squirrels’

By James Wynn

A Leicestershire wildlife hospital has raised concerns about new legislation regarding the care of injured squirrels.

According to new EU regulations, which will be kept by the UK after Brexit, rescue centres cannot return non-native injured animals to the wild following their treatment.

Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital said it has no room to keep the squirrels, so they will have to be euthanised.

“We’re having to euthanise them for being what they are and it’s not fair,” Harriet Childs, team leader at the hospital, told the BBC.

The RSPCA said it supports some aspects of the legislation but is saddened that it will ultimately “result in the needless destruction of animals.”
