Students in Leicester are being urged to make sure they register to vote so their voice doesn’t go unheard in one of the most important General Elections in recent British history.
The deadline for registering to vote for the General Election is Tuesday, November 26, just over two weeks ahead of election night on Thursday, December 12.
Professor Alasdair Blair, Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor Academic at De Montfort University (DMU), said: “I think most people are aware of voting and the importance of the election.
“There is likely to be an element of fatigue around some of the issues such as Brexit, but there are significant issues up for debate, not least of which is the future direction of the country.”
Students who are newly eligible to vote are being encouraged to vote in this election, as it will be a historical change within the current political climate.
Professor Blair continued: “Students should vote because it is their democratic right which people in previous generations have fought and in some instances died for.
“Voting provides an opportunity to express your views on the future direction of the country.”
DMU will have a polling station on campus, but where a student lives will determine the station they choose to use.
Although people can register at more than one address, students are being warned they must choose only one place to do so – it is illegal to vote more than once in the same election, such as a General Election.
