The King Richard III Visitor Centre has won an award for Best Museum at the Group Leisure and Travel Awards.

The awards, held last week(OCT10) at the Hilton Metropole hotel in Birmingham, are voted for by travel organisers and they aim to recognise the best attractions, travel trade companies and tourism providers.

A spokesperson for the visitor centre said: “The Visitor Centre was shortlisted alongside stiff competition, with the British Museum, National Railway Museum and Postal Museum, which makes the win even more significant for the team.”

The accolade for Best Museum was new to Group Leisure and Travel Awards this year which made the King Richard III Visitor Centre the very first recipient.

Group Leisure and Travel editor, Keeley Rodgers, said: “Our readers have had their say on the best across the group leisure and travel industry and what a fantastic array of providers, attractions and destinations we have.

“The quality this year has been so good that some outstanding attractions and companies didn’t even make the shortlist.

“A huge congratulation to all of the finalists and of course, our ultimate winners.”

Presented by writer, broadcaster and actor, Gyles Brandreth, other awards given out during the evening were Best UK Attraction for Children and Families, Best Historic Attraction or Venue and Best Theatre Production.

Iain Gordon, Visitor Centre Director, said: “We are so thrilled that the Visitor Centre has been named as Best Museum.

“Being up against some very strong, world-famous venues, we were surprised but obviously very proud to win. Group travel is a highly competitive market with so many great attractions and destinations in competition with each other.

“We have worked hard over the last four years to bring group travel business to the Visitor Centre and to Leicester and winning this award is testament to the hard work of the team.”
