De Montfort University (DMU) has high hopes for the upcoming Varsity Festival next week, once again pitting themselves against fierce rivals University of Leicester (UoL).

The Varsity Festival, which runs from the 11th to the 25th of March, sets DMU and UoL against each other in a number of sports and activities, ranging from Football and Rugby Union, to Chess and Poker tournaments.

“We’re aiming to go on and win it this year, that’s always the goal” said Stephen Burrell, Vice President of Student Activities at De Montfort Student’s Union.

“It’ll be great to see the effort being put in from everyone involved.”

After suffering a crushing 37-13 defeat in 2014, DMU are definitely looking to bounce back and claim a few scalps.

“We’re looking to do well in the rowing, netball, basketball and women’s volleyball this year.”

The most popular events in Varsity are always the Men’s Rugby Union and Football first team finals. The Rugby, held at Welford Road Stadium on Wednesday 18th, is one of the biggest spectacles on the university sporting calendar.

“I’d definitely recommend everyone coming down and having a watch and get involved.” Stephen added.

“Look on the Student’s Union website, the Varsity links will be going up today and we’ll have clips posted on there during the festival.”

Throughout the festival, Demon Media will have constant coverage through Twitter, Demon FM updates and live commentary for the football, basketball and rugby first team matches.
